High fuel consumption 2003 Jazz SE 1.4 CVT-7
« on: March 10, 2015, 02:54:49 PM »
Hi fellow Jazz owners!

I'm wondering whether I'm the only one having an unusually thirsty engine. Ive got a 2003 Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT-7.

I measured that for urban driving the values are 9.6l/100km (29mpg Imperial).

I am not a jerky driver and I enjoy driving smoothly so I do not think I have a heavy foot.
The car just had a full service done (filters,  oil, spark plugs, etc.). The measurements above were taken after the service.

My dealer suggested I have the valve clearances adjusted. They say that will cost me £100. A fellow forum user said that this particular service runs above £300 so something smells fishy. Should I do it with having any hope that my mpg will drop?

Thanks!

EDIT:
I rung a few other Honda dealers to ask for a price on a tappets adjustment. They quoted the same £100 so maybe it's legitimate. I'll go for it and will report on what happens later.

That is heavy fuel economy,  try seeing if there are any fault codes.  You can buy OBD2 scanners very cheap.

Hello JazzyJames_93

Just the other week I took my wifes jazz out for a run and the mpg was down to 39mpg from it's normal low 50's. When I got back home I felt around all four of the alloy wheels with the back of my hand and found the rear nearside a lot hotter than any of the others.

Cause - binding brake caliper. Brake wasn't releasing fully, more friction, causing heat and lower mpg.
fix - bought new seals kit from ebay.

Refurbished caliper last weekend and now back to 52.3mpg as of this morning.

worth a look.
