Passenger air bag re call???
« on: February 01, 2019, 12:15:01 AM »
hi all !! had a letter from honda today stating that my jazz 2010 1.4 i vtec was in need of a passenger air bag re call for replacement I only thought the problem was with the drivers??? I had that replaced in 2017 but why did they not do both at the same time, anyone had the same??? any comments?? they said I have to wait for a second letter and then contact my local dealer for replacement free of charge  but a second letter? why not just send out one and have done with it?? crazy system

I'd guess that there's a limited supply of airbags and their constituent parts. 99.9999% of crashes where the airbags goes off will have a driver in the car, much less percentage will have a passenger. So that is one possibility why there's been a gap between the two.

Just what I said before in slightly earlier thread, all airbags have the same propellant but some are bigger than others ( volume of actual airbag ).  Owing to the fact that the supplier of faulty parts ( they supplied lots of car makers) Takarta went bust there is bound to be a shortage of parts.  There was bound to be a shortage anyway because normal production is set up for supply for new cars and a few spares - you cannot just magic up millions of extra parts from thin air.

The propellant goes unstable in hot and humid regions ( tropical areas of the world  which does not cover UK by any stretch of the imagination ) so as a matter of priority those areas would get done first, followed by the most used and most dangerous airbag ( the drivers ) and than the rest in order of perceived likelyhood of the airbag being deployed and the possible consequences.  It is all a matter of careful management of the recall bearing in mind the shortages of parts and manpower.

You cannot change airbags via an app on your smartphone or a click of a mouse, real people doing real work are involved..

I understand your frustration, Kevinvtec!
I first received a letter in Autumn 2016. Called my local dealer as I didn't hear anything in March 2017. It was changed and weeks later received a letter from Honda UK but I thought it was a reminder
for the driver's one so threw it away-little did I know it was for the passenger side! Had a service in Sept 2017 and then found out the passenger one needs doing as well! So had to wait for the part to arrive and went on another day!

To be fair, if there was a sudden demand of airbags, why can't the manufacturer hire some more staff and produce them as there is a demand?

It is not only extra people, specialised machinery is required and its production speed has been designed for normal production, most car plants and suppliers already work 24/7 to meet demand.  A company I used to work for supplied friction welders to assemble the propellant cartridges for airbags.

Add to that the company that made the airbags in the first place closed down, so that left a huge hole in supply chain.

Received our '1st' letter today also, regarding this aspect. As Johncb500 mentions, it is good system works. Well, can say system certainyl works as we bought our car as 'cat c' and cost 50% of cost of similar car. (Don't really know why buying a 'cat c' car should mean makers of cars no longer know who has car, as this info is kept at DVLA!

Anyway, glad that they know of 'new owner' and like rest wil wait for them to get in touch again once they have parts etc.

The car manufacturer get the information for present owner from DVLA records.......

When I had my driver side airbag replaced some time back, my dealer took some persuading to give me written notification that it had been changed.   I had to write to the dealership manager to complain, before I was given written confirmation.

My argument was that should I sell the car, I can readily prove to the new owner that the work had been done.   I'm expecting a similar process when the passenger bag is changed.

If it's been done then it shouldn't show as an outstanding recall on the Honda recall web page:  https://www.honda.co.uk/cars/owners/recalls-and-updates.html
