Headlight leveling system no longer works
« on: September 16, 2023, 02:19:02 PM »
Hello,

On my wife's Jazz, the headlight leveling system no longer works.
It is a GG3 year 2011 with halogen headlights.

Last year in the fall it was still working. However, we noticed that it was spinning a bit. I felt like whenever it rained hard, both motors would adjust the headlights up and down ever so slightly with the ignition on, without adjusting anything. It didn't matter if it was while driving or stationary.

Now neither headlight can be adjusted.

Fuse is ok.

Leveling switch: measured (Pin2/4 4,58kOhm - Pin2/3 0,49kOhm; 1,73kOhm; 2,38 kOhm; 3,11 kOhm) - ok.

Measured each driver/passenger side cable to actuator for headlights:
Battery voltage 12.2V (light green) - measured at connector 11.8V - is 0.4V loss - OK?
Continuity measured to ground (black) - ok.
Leveling switch set to 3 and measured purple against ground - should be 2.9kOhm or 3.1kOhm - measured 1.28kOhm. At both plugs for the headlights and also no matter which setting I make at the leveling switch.
If i turn the ignition on i measure an infinitely high resistance. - so i think purple is the problem. but why? measured from the plug for the leveling switch to the plug for the leveling motor - ok.

Can someone help me, where the error is?

Edit: Where is the ground G501? Cant find it in the manuals.

G501 is shown on the first of your images as the ground for the switch itself. Did you mean where is it physically? Sorry can't be of much help,  hope you sort it,  such issues are very commonly poor connections or grounds.

can anyone help me find out the fastest way to determine the cause of the error. so what would be the right way to proceed?

Bit beyond my knowledge. But I wouldnt expect different behaviour in the rain. Could this mean water/damp has got in somewhere, initially changing  electrical resistance and eventually corroding electrical contacts or mechanical moving parts.

If you are sure which are the earth/ground connections you could try   bridging these, one at a time , by running an additional  temporary wire to a known good earth connection . This might reveal that an earth/ground  is present but inadequate.   But at your own risk, I'm not a sparky.

I am seeing the same as you. Maybe there is a problem with the site in the link?

yep, the site is having a problem displaying the pictures properly.
This is the picture you need:

The magnified section should show G501

hey, this is exactly i wanted to do. But i dont know where the ground is.
You could route a temporary wire from a good ground point (blank screw or similar) to the ground pin (#4) of the leveling switch plug (with the switch plugged in). (At your own risk, no guaranty for correctness)
I don't know what the plug looks like exactly. It may be difficult to access blank metal of the pin without having the right probing leads.
If the system works with this temporary grounding, you know the problem ist G501 or the wiring up to there.

But i think i have read, that G501 is the ground for a lot of systems. Do you have any other systems acting strange?

hey ninda,

thanks a lot. no, all the other systems seems ok.

my thought was, that the ground is a little corroded or something else. but on this postions ther will be no rost. but i will check it on the weekend.

good to know where the wireing harness is, so i can check if the cable behind the speedo is worn through.

@OP
Re invisible "drawings".
I too use FireFox - try right click on image and select open in 'New Tab', go to New Tab and use three bar Settings Menu menu at top RHS of browser, scroll down to ZOOM and adjust to your preference click image to close FireFox Settings menu. Might be worth checking/resetting Zoom to 100% on New Tab when finished.
Looking at Diagram G501 appears to  connect to Earth any good bolt /nut though chasis/body shell should suffice.
BUT THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK I too am not a sparky.

i have found G501 - its right behind the speedo. But it looks good. And all i could see that all the cables are well installed.

So i come to the point to give the problem to an expert.

Hey guys,

good news for me and maybe some good news for you.

I found the problem myself. both leveling motors where defect.

How i found it out. i thought because both motors were defect, there is a problem with the switch, the micu (because the wiring goes throu it, but its only because of the fuse) or the wiring itself.

so i recreate the wiring (see the picture below), connect the switch and tested it. so all resistors were perfect. than i connected to one leveling motor and nothing happened. so i bought a new one and this works.

later i saw both motors in the leveling motor device where corroded.

hopefully i could help someone, with the same problem.

part number of the leveling motor (both side is the same): 33130-SJK-J01
