Spare key
« on: September 06, 2024, 07:25:22 PM »
Hi all. I need a spare key but have little funds  :(

I've read a few posts on here about spares but I need to ask a question: Can I take my current key somewhere and get them to copy it? I appreciate that it would then need programming for remote but could I just not program it and just use it manually ? I figure that would make it all a cheaper option.

I understand Timpsons do car keys for not too much money.

If you just got the key blade cut you could unlock the door manually  but the cars security system would not allow the car to be started unless the key transponds the correct security code .   Car keys typically contain a tiny security chip . When you put the key in the ignition the car  sends it  a proximity signal and the chip responds with a code. (It doesnt need a battery to do this  -just like security tags etc)

Not to be confused with the remote locking and unlocking. Here the key sends the car a vhf radio  signal using a battery in the key.  You can manage without remote locking  if the battery goes flat etc.

If you still have  the original key   ,specialists such as Timpson can normally read its   security chip code and  VHF remote locking signals fairly easily  and recode the new key to match both.  This may be included in the price as they key is not much use without it.         Things get more expensive and complicated if you have lost your keys entirely.

EEK!  :o  Sorry , I didn't realise they were that much. I wondered why  dealers  ask if you have both keys when valuing a car .   :-[     I can only suggest googling to see if you can find a small independent specialist  in your area who have their own shop and may be more realistic on price.   It may be better to avoid  mobile emergency services or agencies who advertise nationally but use local contractors.

For me, Timpsons are a tad expensive.  Off-topic, I recently had a quote for a new watch movement to be fitted by them.  £100 for the movement plus labour on top.   I sourced a new movement and learned how to fit it myself.  £11.50 including postage.

I'm in the same boat - a key cut and programmed even in a shopping centre is like $180 in Australia so I've ordered a key from aliexpress for about $30 with cutting.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000899076145.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.24.2e821802ZyzNVm

You supply a picture of your key and they cut it, then you have to program it.

Check the model of your key (will be faint set of numbers and letters on the key) so that the code part will match and then there's the programming part which I hope will be easy - seems like you have to do 5 times position on (II) lock door button, position off and they start locking after the last time and your key is in.

I'm still waiting for the key, I'll post an update after I get it. I also have an OBD bluetooth scanner, maybe that will be useful too.

Cheers!
