It's a per-account switch that's turned on at the Google end and doesn't rely on which version of the app you have. It doesn't rely on which version of Android you have, either.

For instance I have Android Auto version 8.7.

Google are cautiously rolling it out at the moment.

I got a AA update yesterday to version 8.8x and along with it came split screen.

However, it seems useless for me.

I get 2 extra side panels, one of which shows recent navigation destinations - that without split screen shows over Maps anyway and the other panel just shows 'media unavailable' so is greyed out.

I've had a play and I can't see any way of changing what goes in the media panel.
Let's be careful out there !

I just went out and the screen was usual maps, parked, came back, and dual screen came up by itself. Two thirds was maps which you had to go to the square at bottom right to full screen and magnify to your preference, then back again, and one third was music player which worked very well on screen or on steering wheel on random showing album cover as background. Samsung A series with Pulsar as the player.

From what I can gather the media panel links to music apps on your phone ?

I don't have any, I play music from a USB stick or occasionally the radio.

As a result that panel is pointless for me so I'm back to full screen.

Yes the music player has to be on the phone, unless maps can be wireless and one side screen to USB input, which I guess entails mods to the Honda screen system.

My perfect Jazz would have two 9in screens next to each other like the E. You can flick back and forth to set maps or music (and a lot else), or passenger can enter destinations and flick back to driver side and then play with the dab station etc etc on other side.

My phone is connected wirelessly but the USB stick could not be displayed, not for the want of trying.

My phone connects wirelessly to the Jazz headunit and my Garmin DS61. I run Maps in satellite view and stream Speedtrap Alert so I'm not going to burden the wireless connection streaming music as well.

Maybe Google will allow user changing of panels to miss out media, I can wait.

... Mine appeared on the drive home. I'm on the 8.7.630264-release.
My 'music panel' is taken up by YouTube Music.
