Oil
« on: September 24, 2022, 11:06:40 AM »
Need to top up my engine oil but not sure what to get as dont know whats in there  now. What viscosity should i buy and does it matter if it is mixed with different viscosities (ie the old stuff that is in there now). Appreciate your help, ta.

Pop your reg number into Opie oils, or try coxmotorparts entering model age etc.
Its 5w-30 many owners  use Castrol but any oil will be ok.
Not usual for Jazz engines to use oil so Best to check when last serviced, as well as for any source of leaks.
Remove dipstick when engine cold & dip twice before adding new oil a little at a time.

Mine uses oil all the time. I just add 5w-30 semi-or fully synthetic. The maker doesn't bother me. I buy whatever is on offer at Halfords, Euro Car Parts or even Asda. I have even topped up with 10w-40 if it was all I had to hand. The manual says 5w-30 with 10w-40 good down to -20C. Low oil will do harm, mixed oil (as long as it is suitable) won't.

First I'd check  if the existing oil is still in good condition. Its a waste to top it up if it really due a complete oil and filter change.  You can probably tell from when it was  last serviced   but if in doubt  try rubbing some oil from the dip stick between your fingers.  (best to wear thin rubber gloves. )   Black oil  may still be ok but if it looks black and tarry  or feels gritty  change it.     If still in doubt  change it.

If topping up is the way to go  don't worry about  what's already in there. Just add whatever grade is recommended. 5w30 should be fine.  Different  makes, viscosities and synthetic/semi etc mix no problem.

If i'm not mistaken, Honda recommends oil that has A5/B5 specs, so i wouldn't just top up with any oil you could find, i would try to find one that has the above mentioned specs.

This covers everything from Comma through to Magnatec. Modern oils for petrol-engined vehicles are virtually all A5/B5 spec.
