Has anyone compared the Toyota Yaris Hybrid with the Jazz hybrid?

As a Jazz Hybrid owner I read that comparative review with interest and had difficulty in relating the Jazz in that review with my own car. This review of the Yaris Hybrid http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/toyota/yaris-hybrid/verdict summarises some of the key differences. The Yaris wins around town and the Jazz is much better on the open road. Remember that normally the Jazz Hybrid doesn't run on the battery alone. In broad terms the generator/motor/battery arrangement is there to save energy during deceleration and use it to assist the engine when accelerating. Half the gain is in smoother running with improved low revs torque with only a modest (10 to 15%) improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the non-Hybrid model.

I also suspect, from looking at the photos, that the Jazz is somewhat more spacious inside.

I took the new Yaris out for a test drive last saturday.

My dislikes as a driving instructor are:
1.  Door mirrors are too small.
2.  Windows are too small making the interior dark compared to the Jazz.
3. Theres an awful woodchip design on the dashboard and door cappings.
4.  Interior plastics look very cheap for the price of the car.

The likes:
1. Nice touchscreen display for radio, information screen etc.
2. Nice drive, but no better than the Jazz.
3. Info screen shows mpg on each minute of driving, so we managed to reach 100mpg on some periods, how accurate this actually is, is debateable.

However my next car won't be a Yaris Hybrid.

I looked at buying a Yaris hybrid before I bought my Non hybrid Jazz.

No folding door mirrors on lower models.

CVT very noisy when acclerating.

Boot floor not flat unless you buy an extra boot floor £80.

Ride harder than Jazz.

Horrible tinted rear glass....(I Hate tints).
I did not enjoy front seating.

Rear seats did not fold FLAT..

And in reality , you cannot achieve with 20% of the quoted fuel consumption if you live in hilly areas - we do..

On the other hand, it was quiet around town...

I see the review quotes EU fuel consumption figures.  As these are best treated as sheer invention in the real world, the comparisons made are best treated as bull excrement.

Friend's wife has one.  She is an IT support specialist and likes gadgets.  Lots of info on the display and she had to read the book - a first for her.  She says the ride is quite firm.  I have only been in it for 15 mins and it is very quiet, although not as quiet as a Prius which I travel in quite a lot

Well today my wife and I went for a test drive in both, one after the other, to help us decide. It is going to be difficult and it may come down to the deal in the end. Impressions were:-
Yaris - more modern, more stylish, more techy kit like bluetooth, DAB radio, parking aids.(essential) Quieter around town, heavier feel to steering, higher quality feel inside and better dash. I think will be more economical on my wife's majority journey's of under 5 miles.

Jazz - lovely roomy, airy feel to interior , better visibility. Colour changing dials both useful and fun but I would possibly spend too much time looking at them! Plastics seem cheaper. Very smooth and easy to drive although so was Yaris. Obviously more versatile storage options.
Both were great to be honest.

My gut feeling is that she is going to prefer the Jazz for the space and me the Yaris for the looks and gadgets! So not much progress although initial dealings look like the same level Yaris will be cheaper.

When I got my hybrid I looked at the Yaris too. It would have been a few pounds a month cheaper as you say.
Toyota are good cars and their dealers generally have a good reputation too.
I thought the Yaris was a good little car, the Jazz is a good compact car. You are right that the Jazz is very roomy and a nice place to sit. However, for the same money as a Jazz without, you can have a glass roof Yaris. The Yaris may be more economical as it will run electric more often, although I get quite a lot of EV running - but the engine is still on. I prefer the Honda implimentation of the CVT, the Yaris is a bit buzzy and more frenetic. Jazz plastics are not the best, but seats are very good. I really enjoy driving the Jazz, it is ideal for what I need, but had I got a Yaris I expect I would be happy with that too.
What does suprise me is how happy I am with the hybrid drive. I really do enjoy it.
