Replacement tyres
« on: August 16, 2010, 08:33:10 PM »
The factory-fit Bridgestones on my '07 Jazz Sport will need replacing probably by about October or 35,000 miles.

What tyres have you chosen as replacements? Did you stick with the Bridgestones or choose something else? Currently Continentals are the cheapest premium tyres.

I do loads of miles in my company car and take a close (some would say sad) interest in tyre performance.

I am not massively into "this tyre or that gives better grip" type arguments as I don't drive on the limit very often. What I tend to go by is price vs the mileage before they wear out.

So, on that basis, I changed the Bridgestones on my wife's Jazz for four Dunlop SP Sport 01. If someone else is paying, Michelin tend to give long service but I also liked the Goodyear Elegance I had on a previous car (Audi A6).

I buy from blackcircles.com these days.

Hope that helps.

The Dunlop Sports that were supplied on my EX wore down quicker than expected (tracking problem for the front wheels, but that doesn't explain the back wheels). When I replaced them in May, I got Continentals fitted.

I`ve had Michelin Energy Saver tyres on my Jazz now I`ve Continental EcoContact and the difference is noticable. With the latest tyres the grip is a lot better (dry and wet) and the tyre noise is less. Worth to read reviews http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/.

I changed the Bridgestones on my 2006 CVT for four Continental Premium Contact 2 tyres about 2 months ago. Now they have bedded-in I am very happy with them. The car appears to be more stable on the road and is nicer to drive, minor imperfections on the road surface seem to be smoothed out and road noise has been reduced.  Another benefit is that fuel consumption has improved by about 2 MPG.

My daughter has recently bought 2 Uniroyal RainExpert tyres for her Mitsubishi Colt. These were £49 each as opposed to £80 for the Continentals.  An internet search for tyre tests shows that the Uniroyals are excellent budget tyres scoring as well as the Continentals. They are a good looking tyre, the groves in the Continental look unnaturally wide in comparison.  The tread depth on the Continentals was 7.5mm when new but closer to 8.5mm on the Uniroyals, does this mean that the Uniroyals have better mileage potential?

Although I don't normally buy French if I can help it, I swear by Michelin Energy savers. They outlast other tyres by quite a margin, are quiet running and they do actually seem to save fuel - and (I may regret saying this!) seem to be very puncture resistant.

They have very flexible sidewalls which helps the firm Jazz suspension and have great dry grip even if the wet grip is slightly less than some other tyres - but hey,  I always drive more carefully in the wet anyway (is there anyone who doesn't ?????).
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Replacing tyres is never easy from the point of the view that there is so much choice out there.

Not only is there a lot of tyre companies but also most of them have more than one type in that particular size.

I suppose money comes into it, you could choose the cheapest you could find or go for a well known brand that you had say previous experience.

But I am gonna stick with what was supplied on my Honda from new which are the Bridgestone's because Honda must of spent a lot of R&D into what tyres to put onto the Jazz.

So for me its the Bridgestone's Potenza RE 040.

Honda fit Bridgestone tyres because of an old agreement of about 50 years ago.

Bridgestone ceased to manufacture  motorcycles in lieu of which they became  OEM supplier of tyres to Honda

Just had two new tyres fitted to the front of my Jazz by Kwik Fit - Contiental Premium Contact 2 185/55 R15 82V.

The original Bridgestones had 3/4mm tread left after 36,850 miles but with the VAT increase it wasn't worth putting it off (personally, I change my tyres at 3mm)

The rears still have 4/5mm left.

You should have buy tyres online (+choose a garage with it, if you want) and save £30 on each tyre. I bought my ContiEcoContact (175/64 R14 82T) for £45 each + labourer.

Too late for the OP but hopefully of some use:

After searching around (including this forum) I've recently put a full set of Michelin Energy Savers the missus' '04 SE. For the first time since buying the car it feels more planted & is going where you want it to go. It now seems far less inclined to be upset by poor surfaces.

I paid £220 for the set after getting a local fitter to match Black Circles online price.

Have prices shot up?

Blackcircles offer budgets at £60 - 75 and Premiums at £80 - 110 each

The 2% VAT rise does not explain this
