obd scanner/reader
« on: February 18, 2014, 11:22:54 PM »
Looking to get a obd scanner/reader for my jazz but need some help in choosing one.

Is there anybody who has one that works on their jazz who could give me details.

The ones I have found on amazon/eBay seem to be OK but a lot of reviews saying that they don't work on their cars.

That's the one I use. Originally bought for the Fiat I owned. Suffered from constant engine light. Plugs right in to the Honda, no problems.

I use an ELM327 bluetooth scanner.  $8 from China.  App free on Android phone - look for "Torque" in Play Store

Here is one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELM327-OBDII-OBD-II-OBD2-Mini-Auto-Diagnostic-Scanner-Bluetooth-Tool-/111208676958?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19e48dbe5e

I would be inclined to go with the one from Amazon.  Quite good value really.  The trick with all these devices is understanding the data it presents to you.

I ordered one through JazzyB's link to Amazon.  It is made by Autel and is identical to the pics of the red coloured model listed on Amazon UK.

It would have come in useful a few weeks ago when the check engine light lit up on our VW.  It was an intermittent fault with the coolant temperature sensor which required two visits to the garage to resolve.  First visit to diagnose and clear the code at no cost.  Second visit to replace the sensor after the error returned a few days later.

If I had an android phone or tablet, I probably would have bought the ELM327 bluetooth scanner as it can do a lot more than just read and clear codes.

Pics are from MS309 connected to my 57 Jazz.

Purchased a "V1.5 Super Mini ELM327 OBD2 II Bluetooth Car Auto Diagnostic Interface Scanner" from eBay £5 from Hong Kong.

Works OK with Torque from the android phone. Its the small translucent blue one available from many sellers. Seems to get a full read of codes plus has a fair amount of live data although much is meaningless to me, was a bit picky on initial pairing but fine everytime since. Had an enforced stop with a check engine light a couple of years ago because a coil pack sensor had unplugged itself shortly after leaving the motorway and joing the twisty lanes.

Keep this in the glovebox now, would have enabled me to diagnose the fault and clip the (out of sight) cable back in place.
I do not know if it will reset lights/codes when the fault is cleared as I've not had the opportunity to test this since purchase.

Yes, have the identical one and have bought 4 for friends.  Was able to assist neighbour with a Fiat LDV that would not start.  He had already replaced the plugs and checked everything he could think of

Within 30 seconds it reported "fuel pump or filter low pressure".  Sure enough, some idiot had fitted the fuel filter back to front and it had shut off.  Replacing this with a new one got the car to start immediately.  The idiot that put the fuel filter on back to front (which does have an arrow indicating fuel flow) actually works for a Fiat agency

Is there nothing that can scan, clear and program the ECU? Also to program new keys, sort the immobilizer etc?
Those listed here are cheap scanners with very limited scope.
