Transmission whine- uh-oh
« on: April 23, 2017, 10:48:44 PM »
Hi all,

Just joined :) because I have a Jazz with transmission whine and need some advice :(

So we have a 2011 Jazz with a cvt gearbox that we bought a year or so ago on 63,000 miles. It's now just hit 80,000 and has started whining... so that's not good.

It's definitely from the gearbox or the transmission in some way as it only makes the noise in gear.  Most noticeable in the lower ranges, not loud enough to be heard over road and wind noise after that.  Downshifting using the paddles off the throttle makes the noise louder, it's quite distinct if I drive at around 20, lift off the throttle and then downshift to the lowest 'gear'.

Reading the internet has thrown up loads of gearbox bearing failure stories, although a lot of those seem to be from owners of the earlier models.  I've read the thread on this forum where an owner had a gearbox fail because of the cvt cone bearings... hoping it's not that :o

So questions then- could the noise be something else, such as the clutch? I don't know much about cvt gearboxes at all.

is there a recommended dealer or specialist in London that has previous  experience of diagnosing gearbox noises? I'm keen on taking it to a dealer who has specific experience if possible.

Thoughts? Other than this the car has been brilliant and trouble free.  It's up to date with servicing although the last few (two at least) have been carried out by independent garages.

Comments welcomed, thanks :)

Hi. When was the last time the CVT transmission fluid changed ???? :o It is supposed to be changed every 2 years and ONLY with the correct Honda fluid . I don't suppose that an independent garage would know or even do this???.
As for the clutch I don't believe your model has one it has a Torque Converter instead .
I would try and find out when the last fluid change was or failing this have it changed and see if it makes a difference .

Nab is right, the 2011 model has a torque converter clutch.
The service record has a space for gearbox oil changes but even Honda dealers fail to fill them in.
I, too, would suggest a fluid flush and change but emphasis only with Honda fluid. When drained and refilled for the flush it is essential that the gearbox is operated through its selections to ensure that all the nooks and crannies are flushed out.
There is plenty on here about CVT oil changing if you search.

Vic.

Ok thanks all- have read this:

And a fluid change as a flush and change again doesn't look hard at all, so I'll do that and see what happens- with genuine Honda fluid.

Shall report back afterwards...

Cheers

Is there a difference between the genuine Honda transmission fluid for the first generation jazz and the second generation?

I'm keen on ordering online for the convenience of it turning up at the door- just checking there wasn't a change in oil types between the cars.

Cheers

The spec has been upgraded. It is suitable for both models.

Thanks all- two containers of oil ordered online, delivery will be in time to crawl about under the car at the weekend.

Shall report back on whether the noise is still there or not...

Cheers

Yesterday I drained the oil, refilled, drove round the block using all the ratios, drained and refilled the oil again.

Noise is still there, no better or worse than before.  Think it's time to take the car to a Honda dealer for their opinion.

Fingers crossed it isn't a gearbox bearing, but given what I've read online I don't think there's much else it could be.

Cheers

Hi, i fear i'm having the same symptoms. However the car doesn't feel any different. Do you have any updates on the problem?
